Update – Legionella was identified as the cause of the cluster of pneumonia cases in Tucuman, Argentina

Washington, D.C., 3 September 2022 (PAHO) - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has been informed by the Argentina Ministry of Health that legionella has been confirmed as the cause of a cluster of pneumonia cases associated

with a health clinic in the province of Tucuman, Argentina.

To date, 11 cases have been identified, including four deaths in patients with comorbidities.

Legionella, in particular bacterium L. pneumophila, is associated with outbreaks of severe pneumonia. The most common form of transmission is the inhalation of contaminated aerosols produced in conjunction with water sprays, jets or mists. Infection can also occur by aspiration of contaminated water or ice, particularly in susceptible patients in hospital environments. Treatment includes the administration of antibiotics for

several weeks or months.

The Argentina Ministry of Health and the provincial health authorities are working to identify the source and implement appropriate control measures. They are collecting environmental samples, conducting risk assessments, and implementing actions in the healthcare clinic

related to the outbreak.

PAHO is providing support to Argentinian health authorities from its Headquarters and the PAHO Country Office in Argentina to investigate

and characterize the outbreak.

The PAHO and World Health Organization Representative in Argentina, Eva Jane Llopis, accompanied Argentina’s Minister of Health Carla Vizzotti

to a site visit today.

In agreement with the national and provincial authorities, PAHO will also send a multidisciplinary team of experts next week to support surveillance, infection control measures within hospital care, and the identification of the origin of the outbreak at the hospital infrastructure level.

I LOVE ABC THERE RIGHT ON THE BALL

Russia has allies but it's complicated

While the likes of Washington, London and the EU headquarters, Brussels, paint the picture of Moscow as the enemy of the modern world, Russia does have allies that rely on it.

Going against the power of the Kremlin could do these nations more harm than good and important economic or political ties mean some may be unwilling to compromise their relationship with Russia.

Some, like Pakistan and Turkey, are caught between faltering relations with the US as they build new links to Moscow and fears of regional instability if war is prolonged.

Others are fearful of being drawn into the conflict with Russia, especially now that Putin has put "nuclear forces" on high alert.

WHO IS STANDING BY RUSSIA

Putin has put his nuclear forces on alert leaving many nations fearful of being drawn into the conflict.(Reuters: Evgenia Novozhenina)

India

Take India, for example. It took a day for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call for "an immediate cessation of violence" but in a phone call with the Russian president, he failed to take any real action.

Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar called it a "grave situation" but stopped short of condemning Russia.

Despite being the world's most populous democracy, Moscow and New Delhi enjoy tight economic ties.

The relationship was strengthened by a landmark meeting in December last year when Modi and Putin signed a slew of defence agreements – including India's procurement of more than 600,000 assault rifles from Russia.

Read more on the Russian invasion of Ukraine:

China

Then there's the other world power – Russia's giant neighbour, China.

China hasn't officially taken a side; it has good relations with Ukraine, cares about its business with Europe – and has an ally in Putin.

Just weeks ago, Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping paraded in a great show of unity ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Beijing hasn't yet offered military support to Moscow but it has bolstered imports of wheat from Russia, a move critics have described as an economic lifeline for Putin.

Only weeks ago, on February 4th, China and Russia signed an agreement declaring the creation of a new world order they described as a 'no limits' partnership that included Beijing's support for Russia's view Ukraine should remain out of NATO.

Yet while China abstained from directly condemning Russia's invasion at a UN Security Council vote on Sunday, Beijing has also declined to directly support it.

Nevertheless, a decade ago such a relationship seemed unlikely – China and Russia were as many rivals as they were partners.

In recent years they have found a common enemy in the United States. The Russian and Chinese leaders are united by a belief that the US is plotting to undermine and overthrow their governments under the guise of democracy and human rights.

United Arab Emirates

As Curtin University's national security expert Alexey Muraviev tells ABC news, clues as to which nations are holding back from criticising Russia are clear by looking at who abstained from the UN Security Council vote condemning Russian aggression: the Chinese, the Indians but also the United Arab Emirates.

"The Russians would find a considerable degree of sympathy in this list because the past five or six years – they became the major power broker there," Muraviev says.

"They developed really strong ties with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and with the United Arab Emirates – so the hard work the Russians were doing over many years is now paying off."

Hungary

But putting two global powers to one side for just a moment, there is also support for Russia from within the European Union, not because of direct support for Moscow but more for having their own beef with Ukraine.

"Russia is not the only one that has some issues with Ukraine. Prior to the war, Romania, Hungary and in fact Poland were all making comments on the rights of their ethnic minorities or had made territorial claims," Muraviev says.

"I don't think the Hungarians are unilaterally siding with either NATO or the EU on the sanctions regime because they have their own quarrels with Ukraine with regard to Ukrainian ethnic minorities in Western Ukraine, which was once part of the Hungarian empire."

The 'stans'

Then there are the central Asian neighbours of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan which have given a muted response as Russian troops swarmed Ukraine's borders.

Notably, one in 10 citizens of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan works in Russia.

Pay cheques, mainly from Russia, constitute 30 per cent of the gross domestic product of Tajikistan, 28 per cent for Kyrgyzstan and almost 12 per cent for Uzbekistan, according to the latest World Bank data.

What can Western action against Russia achieve?

Even so, taking a stance against Russia won't necessarily achieve anything or stop Putin from following through with his plans.

Throughout the conflict, Western intelligence has often been able to predict Putin's next steps but is seemingly less capable of stopping it.

What if the West can't really offer Ukraine much beyond sanctions, prayers and diplomatic interventions?

It's uncertain what sanctions against Russia will achieve if powerful friends continue to offer support.(Reuters: Shamil Zhumatov)

British prime minister, Boris Johnson has told the Ukrainian people "we are with you" but what this solidarity means in practice is up for debate.

The 30-nation NATO alliance will stick to its pledge that it will never send forces to protect Ukraine as a non-NATO member.

Instead, they have offered advisers, weapons and field hospitals. It has however deployed several thousand troops to the Baltic states and Poland.

Some troops could also be sent to neighbouring countries including Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

While Germany has imposed sanctions on Russia and suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2, its Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also argued the security of Europe cannot be assured without Moscow.

Direct confrontation with a nuclear superpower is not an option

Meanwhile, Europeans are scared. Putin has readied strategic nuclear forces which would prove nightmarish for the continent.

"The Europeans were not really united before so there is still a degree of disagreement which Russia continues to exploit," Muraviev says.

"NATO and the United Nations or the United States are not prepared to confront Russia militarily. Let's remember, Russia is not Serbia, Russia is not Iraq, Russia is not Afghanistan."

He adds: "The Americans and the Europeans are not prepared to fight and die for the Ukrainians because they are going to face a different type of military force – they're going to face a nuclear superpower."

A direct confrontation with a nuclear superpower on par with NATO or the United States risks escalating a conventional conflict into nuclear war.

So, if the West isn't willing to take on Russia in military conflict to quell the unrest, and if the sanctions being imposed are going to hurt other countries sitting on the fence, the argument for taking no stance becomes clearer.

While there are fears Vladimir Putin could go beyond Ukraine to take over more of the European continent, experts are sceptical he would take it that far, speculating he sees the country more as a strategic buffer than the start of a European take-over.

When it comes to national security and Europe, defence in the region depends heavily on the United States, which Washington could use as a lever.

But when it comes to China and India, the US has far less sway.

SOME MEDIA OUTLETS ARE SAYING THAT PUTIN'S ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO RESTORE RUSSIA TO ITS FORMER DAYS WHEN IT WAS THE USSR. THE ONLY WAY HE CAN DO THAT IS TO TAKE OVER EVERY COUNTRY THAT BECAME INDEPENDENT FROM RUSSIA/USSR. HE'LL HAVE ONE MASSIVE FIGHT ON HIS HANDS IF HE TRIES TO DO THAT AND IT'S ONE FIGHT HE WON'T WIN.

THERE'S OBVIOUSLY CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE. INTERESTINGLY, GERMANY SEEMS TO BE TAKING A MORE PRACTICAL ROLE WITH THEIR SUPPLY OF WEAPONS. SO YOUNG SUCH A WASTED LIFE

The first person in South Australia to be sentenced as part of Operation Ironside will spend at least two years in prison for transporting millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine earlier this year.

John Stephen Stevenson, 25, earlier pleaded guilty to trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug.

The South Australian District Court today heard Mr Stevenson agreed to collect a "small shopping bag" as an unpaid favour for his friend during his regular weekly interstate route as a truck driver between New South Wales and South Australia.

Judge Jane Schammer told the court he initially thought the bag contained a "small amount of cannabis" but knew he was doing "something illegal".

Judge Schammer said he then continued driving, even once he realised he was carrying a significant quantity of methamphetamine.

Key points:

  • John Stephen Stevenson was arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled drug

  • He was today sentenced to four years and six months in prison, backdated to May

  • He will be eligible for parole in two years

Judge Jane Schammer said Stevenson had committed a "very serious offence".(Twitter: Courts Administration Authority)

Stevenson was arrested in May this year at the border checkpoint at Yamba in South Australia's southeast.

He had been discussing pick-up plans on the encrypted messaging platform AN0M, which was being monitored by police.

"[He] was provided with an AN0M device by [his] friend, who showed [him] how to use it to communicate with other users, being members of the syndicate, in order to arrange where and when that you were to meet in order to collect the package," Judge Schammer said.

At the time of his arrest, the 10-kilogram bag, if sold in single street deals, would have been worth between $5 million and $17.5 million.

In sentencing, Judge Schammer accepted that Stevenson did not financially profit from the operation and was at the "bottom end" of the syndicate.

She said Stevenson's letter of apology, which he previously read to the court, showed he was genuinely remorseful and regretful.

Judge Schammer said despite Stevenson's references saying he was a "respected, hardworking and decent person", he had committed a "very serious offence".

"Drugs such as methamphetamine cause considerable misery to those who are addicted to them, their families, and to the wider community," she said.

"Notwithstanding that, your role in this operation was confined to transporting the drugs, your contribution played a role in facilitating what was an extremely serious offence."

Stevenson was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, backdated to when he was arrested in May.

He will be eligible for parole in two years.

ANOTHER GUILTY PLEA FOLLOWING YAMBA DRUG DISCOVERY

Another man has entered guilty pleas associated with a Yamba 10kg Methamphetamine discovery in May, where Police found 10KG of Methamphetamine in a truck.

In court recently 40-year-old Eddie Kadan, formally of Lidcombe NSW pleaded guilty to trafficking 10kg of Methamphetamine from NSW to Adelaide.

It alleged Kadan handed a bag containing the Methamphetamine to truck driver John Stephen Stevenson in the NSW town of Goulburn, prior to the Sturt Highway Police discovery at Yamba.

Truck driver Stevenson previously pled guilty to his role in the operation and was sentenced to four and half years in prison.

Previously in court, it was heard the 10kg of Methamphetamine had a street value of up to $17.5 Million dollars.

The matter returns to court next year.

SA posts a record 688 COVID-19 cases

SA premier Steven Marshall is concerned the volume of COVID-19 cases could overwhelm health systems.

South Australia has reported a record 688 new COVID-19 infections, with more than 70 per cent of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, sparking fears for the state's health system.

Premier Steven Marshall says officials have been carefully monitoring the sharp rise in cases right across the country.

"What we are very concerned about is the very significant increase in transmissibility. We do have to take action," he said on Friday.

"We've updated our forecasts here in South Australia and if we don't take action there is going to be a significant problem for our country.

"The sheer volume of cases could overwhelm health systems right around the world."

Gene sequencing on the SA outbreak has revealed 72 per cent of the new cases are now the Omicron strain.

In response, SA has removed a ban on the widespread use of rapid antigen tests, but only as a screening tool for people without symptoms.

It has also welcomed the decision to cut the interval between a second dose and a booster shot to four months.

For at least the next four weeks people are encouraged to work from home.

A range of local restrictions that were due to be eased on December 28, including changes to density limits and caps on private gatherings, will stay in place into the new year with a date to be determined.

Mr Marshall said there was no way they could be relaxed in the current circumstances.

Over Christmas and the new year, South Australians have been urged to limit celebrations and ensure they keep to the rules, including the 30-person cap on family gatherings.

In relation to the rapid antigen tests, the government has recommended their use before entering high-risk settings such as nursing homes, before attending crowded venues or events, before going to high-risk worksites, or as reassurance for asymptomatic people feeling anxious in the current COVID climate.

Anyone who tests positive on a rapid antigen test must get a more conclusive PCR test and isolate until they return a negative result.

SA officials hope the new tests will reduce demand on the state's virus testing centres which have been swamped in recent days, blowing out waiting times to more than eight hours in some cases.

Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said to help cut the lines further SA would remove the need for casual contacts of coronavirus cases to have tests unless they develop symptoms.

Instead of three tests, close contacts will only be required to have an initial test and then one at the end of their quarantine period.

"It's really important when we're looking at the whole response to this pandemic that we focus our testing where we get the most bang for our buck," she said.

Professor Spurrier said eight people were currently in hospital with one man in his 30s on a ventilator in intensive care.

SA now has 2917 active infections with 1886 isolating at home.

How long does it take for symptoms of the coronavirus disease to appear?

On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.

SA records 842 new COVID cases, one death

More than 840 new COVID-19 infections and one death have been recorded in South Australia.

South Australia has recorded 842 new cases of COVID-19, the state's highest single-day total.

Monday's figures topped the previous high of 774 infections registered the previous day.

SA Health also confirmed a 94-year-old woman had died with the virus in Adelaide on Sunday but the cause of her death is still being determined.

The woman's death is a fifth of someone with

diagnosis will soon be available

in less than 60 minutes.

Premier Steven Marshall said that SA Pathology’s rapid testing capability will be rolled out to all metro and ten major regional hospitals in the coming weeks to provide clinicians with the necessary information to make quick decisions regarding the treatment and care of patients with COVID-19.

“South Australia has led the nation with testing for COVID-19 and the addition of rapid testing will now allow us to provide results in less than 60 minutes for patients deemed clinically urgent,” said Premier Marshall.

“We know that every minute counts for patients that are clinically urgent, which is why this tool will be potentially life-saving for South Australians.

“This comprehensive rollout of cutting-edge rapid testing technology throughout the state is another step in our strong plan to protect South Australians from this virus.”

Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Stephen Wade, said the preparation for rapid testing comes as South Australia begins a two-week blitz testing anyone who presents with symptoms of coronavirus.

“South Australia’s world-class testing regime has been critical in our success in bending the curve and pushing out the peak of COVID-19 and the introduction of rapid testing will take us one step further in the fight against the virus.”

“Our testing regime has been among the best in the world, allowing South Australians a clearer picture of where the virus has spread and the opportunity to quickly act to contain it.”

The Marshall Government has invested $684,000 to rollout out the rapid testing instruments, with each single-test cartridge costing a further $40.

SA Pathology’s Director of Clinical Services, Dr Tom Dodd, said rapid testing was another innovative way to effectively diagnose COVID-19 patients.

“The rapid testing will allow clinicians to make early and well-informed decisions about the treatment requirements of COVID-19 patients, which can be particularly important for patients showing symptoms of the virus,” Dr Dodd said.

“Currently testing results for COVID-19 take around 24 hours to return, so for those urgent cases, rapid testing will be extremely beneficial to ensure they can receive the most appropriate care as soon as possible.

“We know that rapid testing has been effective for diagnosing other viruses such as influenza and the introduction of this rapid testing means we can help stop the spread in the community and possibly save lives of those in the community who are more vulnerable to the virus.

“The instruments required to perform rapid testing are currently being installed across a number of sites in the state, with rapid testing expected to commence in the coming weeks once a shipment of the cartridges required to conduct the testing is received.”

“We are working extremely hard to ensure that all South Australians can continue to access timely testing for COVID-19, with the rapid testing service being another innovative way for us to increase our testing capabilities.”

The ten regional hospitals which will have the capacity are:

  • Southern Fleurieu (Victor Harbor)

  • Gawler

  • Port Augusta

  • Whyalla

  • Port Lincoln

  • Murray Bridge

  • Berri (Riverland general hospital)

  • Mt Gambier

The woman was filmed from another car whose driver can be heard saying, “She just kicked the horse!”

The onlooker then shouts out, “Oi!” at the woman after witnessing the horrific moment.

The teacher was investigated by the RSPCA after the footage came to their attention, The Sun reports.

The mother-of-two has also been stood down from both her places of work, Somerby Primary School and Knossington and Somerby Pre-School, the Mowbray Education Trust confirmed.

Speaking to the BBC, the Mowbray Education Trust’s chief operating officer Paul Maddox said Ms Mould’s employment had been “terminated.”

“As a trust, we are committed to ensuring the best standard of education for all of our young people and we look forward to continuing this throughout the 2021/22 academic year and beyond,” he said in a statement.

When the video began circulating on social media, viewers were horrified.

“Poor horse,” one person wrote.

“Absolutely vile, cruel person, shame on her.

“Hope something is done about this.”

“She should never be allowed to keep animals for the rest of her life,” another said.

FOX BOUNTY COLLECTION POINTS

ANNOUNCED

Thursday 9 September 2021

A series of collection points for the recently announced fox bounty in South Australia have been announced by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA).

In August 2021, the State Government announced a $220,000 program providing a $10 payment for each fox destroyed to help cull the feral pest and further support farmers.

South Australian livestock producers who have a Property Identification Code (PIC) are eligible to claim the bounty for each scalp returned at the collection point.

A minimum of 10 scalps and a maximum of 100 scalps per property can be claimed per collection day. Each property may claim up to a maximum of 300 scalps per year.

More information and a map of the collection sites are detailed on the PIRSA

Charles Robert Watts (2 June 1941 – 24 August 2021) was an English musician who was the drummer for the rock band the Rolling Stones from 1963 until his death in 2021. One of the band's core members, Watts, alongside lead vocalist and frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, were the only members of the band to perform on all of their studio albums. He cited jazz as a major influence on his drumming style.

Originally trained as a graphic artist, Watts developed an interest in jazz at a young age, and joined the band Blues Incorporated. He also started playing drums in London's rhythm and blues clubs, where he met future bandmates Jagger, Richards, and Brian Jones. In January 1963, he left Blues Incorporated and joined the Rolling Stones as drummer, while doubling as designer of their record sleeves and tour stages. Watts' first public appearance as a permanent member was in February 1963, and he remained with the group until his death 58 years later.

Watts "passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his publicist Bernard Doherty said.

"Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones, as one of the greatest drummers of his generation."

Mick Jagger paid a simple tribute to his longtime band mate on social media, posting an image of Watts laughing while behind a drum kit on stage.

Keith Richards shared an image of Watts's drum kit with a closed sign hanging off it.

MNT’s Sunday Supplement: Has the Delta variant made herd immunity impossible?

Scientists and policy-makers hope that herd immunity will offer a way out of the COVID-19 pandemic. When enough people become immune to a virus, it is no longer able to spread within a population — or “herd” — and goes into decline. Even those people who lack immune antibodies against the virus are less likely to become infected.

Vaccination should accelerate the development of herd immunity, but now the head of the Oxford Vaccine Group, Prof. Andrew Pollard, says that this “is not a possibility” because the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — is so much more transmissible than previous strains.

Prof. Pollard revealed his concerns while giving evidence to Members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom’s Parliament, concerns that are likely to be confirmed by a new finding that the Delta variant reduces the effectiveness of vaccines by 49%.

But some researchers remain confident that global eradication of COVID-19 remains possible if a concerted international effort is made to establish vaccine coverage that stays ahead of emerging variants.

To learn more about the science of herd immunity — and the prospect of achieving it — jump to “Will the spread of the Delta variant prevent herd immunity?

JOHANNESBURG: The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) had authorised the purchase of over USD 17-million worth of a Cuban drug after believing that the country was involved in a biological war sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an official.

The South African Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence heard this during a presentation by Major-General Mzikayise Tyhalisi of the SANDF.

The leaders of the SANDF authorised the purchase of 260-million rand (USD 17.7-million) worth of the Heberon Interferon alfa-2b medicine from Cuba despite the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) banning it in the treatment of COVID-19.

Tyhalisi said after President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the Army to assist in enforcing the national lockdown in April last year, the military “swung into a process of planning of the employment and protecting of these forces.

” “Military, in this case, has the sole capability of chemical and biological warfare.

We were dealing with an enemy that we didn't know how it was going to behave.

“The Military Council (the highest strategic decision-making body of the SANDF), then took a decision that is seemed to be a biological warfare problem that we were dealing with and the South African Medical Service (SAMS) was tasked with finding a solution for it so that our soldiers on the ground were protected,” Tyhalisi said.

The SAMS found Interferon which they regarded not as a treatment but as a prophylactic biological product to deal with a biological threat to address a military problem which was being faced at that time, the officer said.

“Psychologically, the morale of the soldiers was heightened by the awareness of available protective drugs.

If you need soldiers having their boots on the ground, you do not have time to have them in ICUs and in hospitals when the security of the country is at stake,” Tyhalisi said.

The Cuban Interferon was found to be potentially useful as it offered protection for Cuban medical personnel deployed at different hotspots globally, he said.

Both the SANDF and the SAHPRA dismissed media reports that there were tensions between the two organisations.

SAHPRA CEO Dr Tumi Semete said there had been cordial meetings between the regulator and the Defence Force.

Tyhalisi said that there had been an agreement with the SAHPRA that the Interferon drug would only be used for clinical trials.

But leading South African virologist and COVID-19 researcher Professor Shabir Madhi from the University of the Witwatersrand told the Sunday Times that there was “no scientific rationale for doing a clinical trial of Interferon alfa-2b as it has already been shown to be ineffective in the WHO solidarity trial in the treatment of COVID-19.

Chinese scientists said a third world war would be fought with biological weapons, while Democrat communists stand in solidarity with this totalitarian enemy, banning the term China virus.

Make no mistake: this is war. Failure to recognize reality will be brutal.

'Coronavirus made in a lab to wage 'biological warfare': Brazilian President's dig at China over COVID-19 By Shreya | Updated: Saturday, May 8, 2021, 13:04 [IST] Brasilia, May 08: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has kicked up another controversy by claiming that COVID-19 was created as part of "biological warfare," in a veiled reference to China. His latest comments are likely to strain between the two countries, as Bolsonaro floated conspiracy theory regarding the origin of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19.

How China Is Using Coronavirus To Wage Political Warfare

It's a continuation of war by other means.

by Dean Cheng

Even amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, China’s efforts at political warfare remain in full swing.

China assiduously tries to shape the world’s view of COVID-19, and China’s role in it, by denying any responsibility for the rise and spread of the new coronavirus as well as attempting to shift the blame toward the United States.

In that context, it’s essential to recognize that when the Chinese Communist Party talks about “public opinion warfare,” wages the “three warfares” (public opinion, psychological, and legal), or thinks about political warfare, in each instance, it’s doing so as warfare, period.

Chinese conduct of public opinion warfare and legal warfare is on display in recent actions, including using the U.S. as the party responsible for the spread of COVID-19. China undertakes these efforts much like military operations.

Such actions are implemented within the framework of “the principles of war.”

For the U.S. military, that’s often been simplified to the mnemonic “ MOOSEMUSS ”:  Mass, Objective, Offensive, Security, Economy of Force, Maneuver, Unity of Command, Surprise, Simplicity.

Thus, when conducting public opinion warfare, there must be “mass”; i.e., you have a large number of outlets working at the same time. You also must “maneuver”; i.e., you need to be flexible, and you need to take the “offensive” to exploit openings as they occur.

“Unity of command” couples with “mass” to ensure that everyone is working toward the same “objective.”

So, Chinese political warfare efforts writ large will be conducted under a single plan; will rarely involve just one action, comment, or outlet; and likely will be sustained. It will enjoy operational security (OPSEC), the same way that a military operation should. (Leakers will not be feted and celebrated.)

Similarly, Chinese political warfare will operate as a “combined arms” effort, employing different methods and exploiting the strengths of each. We see this with the Chinese lawsuits accusing the U.S. of starting (or at least spreading) the new coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19.

That highlights the operationalization of these aspects. Multiple lawsuits (legal warfare) follow on the heels of tweets and broader discussions in the Chinese media, all hammering the same ideas.

One can insist that “political warfare” is a misnomer—that it’s not even “warfare”—and for the West, including the U.S., that may well be true.

But that’s not how the Chinese see it at all. For them, political warfare is the hardest form of soft power and is a strategic option that is underway all the time.

That the world is in the grip of a pandemic makes little difference, because, for the Chinese Communist Party, war is not politics by other means. Politics is war by other means.

China Threatens to Throw America 'Into the Mighty Sea of the Coronavirus.'

China is threatening to wreak havoc on America’s drug supply amid the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. Thanks to our globalist elite and especially missteps during the Obama-Biden administration, Beijing has the power to do just that.

In an article in Xinhua, one of the Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpieces, Beijing threatened that it can impose pharmaceutical export controls after which America will be “plunged into the mighty sea of coronavirus.”

Unfortunately, Beijing isn’t bluffing about this capability.

As Rosemary Gibson, co-author of “China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine,” testified to a congressional committee last summer, China has a dominant role in the manufacture of the generic drugs that comprise 90 per cent of what Americans take.

The critical vulnerability isn’t just in finished drugs, but what is called active pharmaceutical ingredients, some 80 per cent of which America now imports. Most of these come from Red China.

Even finished drugs from other sources are dependent on China. Another major source of generic drugs in India, and 80 per cent of that country’s drug ingredients come from China.

There are many culprits behind this betrayal, but some deserve special mention.

Foremost is the globalist cabal that exported our industries to China in the name of “free trade.” As Gibson also reports, within four years of passage of the Clinton-era law giving China unfettered access to U.S. markets and WTO membership, “the last penicillin fermentation plant in the U.S. closed; China’s vitamin C cartel forced the closure of the last U.S. production facility, and the last aspirin manufacturing facility ceased business because of predatory pricing by Chinese firms.”

The Chinese government has used its favourite playbook to make the world dependent on its drugs: protecting and subsidizing domestic manufacturers to undersell American competitors, aided by Chinese industrial espionage. Indeed, biotechnology is one of ten categories of Beijing’s “Made in China 2025” industrial strategy which has driven so much of its theft of intellectual property and dumping of goods at below-market prices to kill U.S. businesses.

Among the globalists, the former Obama-Biden administration is particularly culpable for putting America at risk. During the eight years of that administration, then-Vice President Biden was often the frontman for responding to the increasing number of foreign outbreaks to which America has been exposed.

During the H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic in 2009, Biden incorrectly addressed the public about the outbreak, “I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places right now… It’s that you are in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes everywhere through the aircraft.”

Speaking about the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, Biden recently said, “I was part of making sure that pandemic did not get to the United States, saved millions of lives.” In fact, the Obama administration admitted people known to have the disease to America.

During the Zika virus outbreak, Biden was in charge of pressuring Congress for funds.

Are we to believe that amid all of this attention to outbreak that Biden and his globalist colleagues didn’t know of America’s growing inability to make even the most basic pharmaceuticals? Throughout the Obama-Biden administration, our dependence on China got much worse.

Last month, Biden criticized the Trump administration’s response to the Wuhan coronavirus. Initially, he slammed the president’s unprecedented decision to stop flights from China: “This is no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia--hysterical xenophobia--and fearmongering.”

Later he flip-flopped to accusing Trump of not doing enough, imagining if he were president that, “I would be on the phone with China making it clear we are going to need to be in your country. You have to be open. You have to be clear. We have to know what’s going on.”

Of course, Beijing’s unwillingness to allow anything of the sort is a reason their coronavirus has spread far and wide. Oddly, Biden and his fellow globalists remain sanguine about China and its ability to influence its communist government. Last year, he said of China, “they’re not bad folks,” and “they’re no competition for us.”

Of course, Biden was not alone, and neither were the Democrats. The House of Bush was always fond of the myth that the economic engagement of China, evidently on terms favourable to Beijing, would turn an adversary into an ally. The myth lives on. Bob Zoellick, who was George W. Bush’s trade kingpin, has been an outspoken opponent of Trump’s effort to end U.S. dependence on China, lamely claiming, “You can’t contain China.”

To fix this medical vulnerability, Trump should apply gradually increasing, permanent tariffs on Chinese drugs and ingredients. He should also establish a strategic reserve of drugs by requiring the Defense Department and Veterans Affairs to buy only drugs that are 100 per cent made in America. This domestic demand would create domestic supply.

Trump should also press drug companies to start a crash program to achieve supply chain independence from China. It would be great if he could achieve this through an appeal to patriotism. If not, he should use the Defense Production Act of 1950 to force the issue.

It’s time to reverse the globalist sellout of America that has put Beijing in charge of our drug supply chain.

Coronavirus is a Biowarfare Weapon Developed by The US - Law, Professor Claims

On January 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the “coronavirus outbreak (to be) a public health emergency of international concern.”

On Sunday, US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci said the coronavirus “almost certainly is going to be a pandemic.”

The WHO defines a pandemic as a “worldwide spread of a new disease.”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls it “a disease that spreads across several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people.”

Britain’s Health and Safety Executive says a viral outbreak can be characterized as a pandemic if it’s “markedly different from recently circulating strains,” notably if “humans have little or no immunity” to it.

The New York Times quoted former CDC director Thomas Frieden, saying it’s “increasingly unlikely (that the coronavirus) can be contained,” adding:

“It is therefore likely that it will spread, like flu and other organisms do, but we still don’t know how far, wide, or deadly it will be.”

The term pandemic applies to a disease that affects large numbers of people worldwide — clearly not applicable to the coronavirus outbreak based on evidence so far. See below.

According to Mayo Clinic’s Dr Pritish Tosh:

“In epidemiologic terms, an outbreak refers to a number of cases that exceeds what would be expected.”

“A pandemic is when there is an outbreak that affects most of the world.”

“We use the term endemic when there is an infection within a geographic location that is existing perpetually.”

An epidemic refers to an infectious disease outbreak in a particular country or community.

How do the above definitions apply to the coronavirus outbreak in China?

Here are the latest numbers through Monday: 20,622 confirmed cases, 426 dead in China, the outbreak mostly in Wuhan and surrounding areas.

Cases in other countries aren’t anywhere near epidemic or pandemic levels. Judge for yourself:

Australia – 12, mostly individuals who returned from Wuhan or Hubei province

Cambodia – 1

Canada – 4

Finland – 1

France – 6

Germany – 10

India – 3

Italy – 2

Japan — 20

Malaysia – 8 (all Chinese nationals)

Nepal – 1

The Philippines – 2

Russia – 2

Singapore – 18

South Korea – 15

Spain – 1

Sri Lanka – 1

Sweden – 1

Taiwan – 10

Thailand – 19

UAE – 5

UK – 2

US – 11

Vietnam – 8

Most of the above cases apply to Chinese nationals or individuals who returned from the country, in most or all cases from Wuhan.

In response to a question asked by a friend on the seriousness of the coronavirus outbreak to people in the US, I explained that the chance of being in an auto accident or harmed by one at home is far greater.

I also stressed that establishment media, especially US cable channels, are the most unreliable sources of information on the coronavirus outbreak, featuring fear-mongering reports.

Some examples include:

The New York Times: “Beijing Sees ‘Major Test’ as Doors to China Close and Coronavirus Deaths Surpass SARS”

The Washington Post: “States scramble to carry out Trump’s coronavirus travel order”

The Wall Street Journal: “Coronavirus Closes China to the World, Straining Global Economy”

Fox News: “Experts worry about pandemic as coronavirus numbers increase”

CNN: “Wuhan coronavirus: Confirmed cases top 20,000 as China marks the deadliest day”

Other establishment media headlined reports are similar.

According to the CDC, at least 15 million flu illnesses have been reported so far during the 2019 – 20 season, resulting in 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the US.

These numbers reflect a national epidemic. Yet little about this is reported — other than annual recommendations to get flu shots, sponsored by Big Pharma.

Natural News calls them “the greatest medical fraud in the history of the world.” Why?

Because they “contain over 50 ppm mercury, an extremely toxic heavy metal linked to kidney failure, birth defects, spontaneous abortions and neurological damage.”

The same goes for other vaccines, potentially more dangerous than diseases they’re meant to protect against.

They’re a bonanza for Big Pharma. On February 1, CNBC reported that “(i)investors (are) rush(ing) into biotechs (that are) working on coronavirus vaccine(s).”

A dozen or more companies are working on developing them, clinical testing to begin in a few months, the profit potential huge. When approved for sale, they’ll be marketed worldwide, advertising promoting them.

On Monday, Natural News reported that the coronavirus was “engineered by scientists in a lab using well documented genetic engineering vectors that leave behind a ‘fingerprint,’ ” adding:

“(T)he WHO and CDC are covering up this inconvenient fact…”

Law Professor Francis Boyle drafted the US Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989 — signed into law by GHW Bush, revoked by Bush/Cheney on the pretext of rebuilding America’s defences at a time when the nation’s only enemies are invented. No real ones exist.

Boyle believes the potentially deadly coronavirus is a biowarfare weapon, genetically modified for this purpose.

China’s Wuhan BSL-4 lab is a WHO-designated research lab, Boyle explaining that the organization is fully aware of what’s happening and how.

Boyle’s assessment contradicts claims about the virus originating from a Wuhan seafood market or being connected to coronaviruses found in bats.

Indian Institute of Technology scientists “discovered that the Wuhan coronavirus has been engineered with AIDS-like insertions” — meaning it’s not a naturally occurring phenomenon if true, adding:

It’s “quite unlikely for a virus to have acquired such unique insertions naturally in a short duration of time.”

China is using AIDS drugs to treat infected patients. China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention is working on developing a vaccine.

In 2003, media spread fear-mongering about a SARS pandemic proved way overblown, 800 deaths reported after hysteria subsided.

In the same year, 42,643 people in the US were killed in 6,328,000 police-reported motor vehicle accidents, 2,889,000 people injured.

In 2009, the WHO falsely predicted a global Swine flu H1N1 pandemic that could affect “as many as two billion people over the next two years.”

At the time, evidence suggested that the H1N1 strain was bioengineered in a US laboratory, vaccines produced for it extremely hazardous and potentially lethal.

No national or global emergency existed. No pandemic or epidemic occurred. The CDC estimated that from 8,330 to 17,160 deaths resulted from the strain.

Fear-mongering at the time aimed to convince people to take experimental, untested, toxic and extremely dangerous vaccines that can damage the human immune system and cause health problems ranging from annoying to life-threatening.

A similar scenario is in play today. Vaccines could be rushed to market, Big Pharma promoting their use.

The US had an active biological warfare program since at least the 1940s.

In 1941, it implemented a secret program to develop offensive and allegedly defensive bioweapons using controversial testing methods.

During WW II, the US Chemical Warfare Services began mustard gas experiments on about 4,000 servicemen.

In 1945, the US Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) implemented “Program F.”

It was the most extensive US study of the health effects of fluoride – a key chemical component in atomic bomb production.

It’s one of the most toxic chemicals known, risking harm to the central nervous system.

Yet low concentration amounts are in drinking water and toothpaste, little or nothing reported officially or by establishment media on its toxicity.

Since at least the 1940s, VA patients were guinea pigs for medical experiments.

The Pentagon earlier released biological agents in US cities to learn the effects of germ warfare in populated areas, tests are done secretly.

In 1953, the CIA initiated Project MKULTRA – a multi-year research program to test drugs and biological agents for mind control and behaviour modification, unwitting human subjects used.

From the 1960s at least through the 1980s, the US used biological agents against Cuba.

During the Vietnam War, the Pentagon’s use of hugely toxic Agent Orange and sarin nerve gas killed, disabled, or caused chronic illnesses for millions, mainly civilians.

In all US wars, radiological, chemical, biological and other banned weapons are used, inflicting a devastating toll on people in targeted areas.

Is the coronavirus a bioweapon as Francis Boyle believes? Most likely, it’ll be contained in the weeks ahead, reported numbers of individuals infected falling, not rising.

When all is said and done, ongoing fear-mongering will likely prove to be a bonanza for Big Pharma.

As for the coronavirus, it may end up a footnote in medical history — thousands affected in China, not millions, mainly in and around Wuhan, small numbers elsewhere.

The first coronaviruses discovered that are able to infect humans are 229E and OC43. Both of these viruses usually result in the common cold and rarely cause severe disease on their own. They are often detected at the same time as other respiratory infections. When several viruses, or viruses and bacteria, are found in patients this is called co-infection and can result in more severe disease.

In 2004, NL63 was detected for the first time in a baby suffering from bronchiolitis (a lower respiratory tract infection) in the Netherlands. This virus has probably been around for hundreds of years, we just hadn’t found it until then. A year later, in Hong Kong, another coronavirus was found – this time in an elderly patient with pneumonia. It was later named HKU1 and has been found to be present in populations around the world.

Deadlier strains

But not all coronaviruses cause mild disease. Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) caused by SARS-CoV was first detected in November 2002. The cause of this outbreak wasn’t confirmed until 2003 when the genome of the virus was identified by Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory. Sars bears many similarities to the current pandemic of COVID-19. Older people were much more likely to suffer severe disease and symptoms included fever, cough, muscle pain and sore throat. But there was a much greater chance of dying if you had Sars. From 2002 until the last reported case in 2014, 774 people died.

A decade later, in 2012, there was another outbreak involving a newly identified coronavirus: MERS-CoV. The first case of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) occurred in Saudi Arabia. There were two further Mers outbreaks: South Korea in 2015 and Saudi Arabia in 2018. There are a handful of Mers cases every year, but the outbreaks are usually well contained.

So why did Sars or Mers not result in pandemics? The R0 of both Sars and SARS-CoV-2 is about two or three (although some more recent estimates of the R0 for SARS-CoV-2 are around five), meaning that every infected person is likely to infect two or three other people. The symptoms of Sars were more severe, so it was much easier to identify and isolate patients.

The R0 of Mers is below one. It is not very contagious. Most of the cases have been linked to close contact with infected camels or very close contact with an already infected person.

One of the main challenges in containing the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak is that symptoms can be very mild – some people may not even show any symptoms at all – but can still infect other people. SARS-CoV-2 is not as deadly as either Sars or Mers, but because it can spread undetected, the numbers of people it will infect and the numbers that will die will be higher than any coronavirus we have ever encountered. So please, stay at home.

Prince Philip, a husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, dies at 99

In his active years, Philip helped set a new course for the monarchy under a young queen, championing Britain itself.

LONDON — Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband and the longest-serving consort of any British monarch, has died at age 99.

Philip spent 65 years supporting the queen, retiring from his public role in 2017 and staying largely out of the view since. In his active years, he helped set a new course for the monarchy under a young queen, championing Britain itself, as well as environmental causes, science and technology.

Philip’s relationship with the young Princess Elizabeth began as a story of young love.

“We behave as though we had belonged to each other for years,” Elizabeth wrote in a letter to her parents shortly after they married.

Over the years, THE QUEEN acknowledged Philip’s deep influence on her, calling him her “strength and stay” in a speech on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997.

“I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know,” she said at the time.

The intensely private prince will likely be remembered for his early efforts to help modernize the royal family’s image during a time of great change for Britain and the world, especially at the outset of Elizabeth’s reign in 1952. He also developed a reputation for the occasional brusque comment and crass, if not racist jokes.

The QUEEN inherited from her father a model of monarchy that was very hands-off, old-fashioned and slightly invisible,” said Sarah Gristwood, a historian and the author of “Elizabeth: The Queen and the Crown.”

“It wasn’t equipped to deal with a new media age, and Prince Philip played a huge role in moving it forward then.”

Philip helped bring the royals to life on television rather than through radio reports. He was the first member of the royal family to do a televised interview and he presented a show on a royal tour of the Commonwealth. He is also said to have had a hand in televising the queen’s coronation in 1953 and in organizing a groundbreaking 1969 television documentary about the family.

“He helped create the model of the British royal family that has enabled it to continue forward into the 21st century,” Gristwood said. “We may have lost sight of that now, but I hope we’ll remember him for it.”

Despite being born into a royal family, Philip’s early childhood was not typically royal.

Born on June 10, 1921, on the Greek island of Corfu, he was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Greece's king, Philip's uncle, was forced to abdicate when Philip was a baby, and the family fled to Paris, with Philip famously carried to safety in a crib made from an orange box.

At age 7, he moved to England, where he lived at Kensington Palace, now home to Prince William. Philip lived there with his paternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, and later attended Gordonstoun, a boarding school in Scotland.

At 18, Philip joined the Royal Navy and graduated from the Britannia Royal Naval College as a top cadet. He saw active duty from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean, and in 1945 at the end of World War II, he was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered.

“Philip modernized everything but slowly as he had opposition from the old guard who wanted to keep it as it was,” she said. “For instance, the Buckingham Palace kitchens, which were almost half a mile from the dining room, took him years to change.”

Even after the couple’s children took on official duties in support of the queen, Philip remained one of the most active royals until his retirement.

He did, however, occasionally make comments deemed racist or insensitive, garnering much-unwanted attention to the royal family.

A remark about British students getting "slitty eyes" during a visit to China in the 1980s became symbolic of his often unguarded manner.

One of his grandsons, Prince William, has spoken fondly of his grandfather's characteristic bluntness, saying in 2004 that he “will tell me something I don't want to hear and doesn't care if I get upset about it. He knows it is the right thing to say."

After retiring from public life in August 2017, Philip continued to draw attention, most notably by crashing his car close to the Sandringham Estate in January 2019. He sent a letter of apology to a woman in the other car who was injured in the wreck, and he gave up his driving license. He also drew criticism when he was photographed soon after driving without a seatbelt.

Unlike many men of his generation, Philip took an active role in raising his children. Prince Charles was born in 1948, and his sister, Princess Anne, two years later. There was a nearly 10-year gap before Prince Andrew was born in 1960, and Prince Edward arrived in 1964.

“For a masculine man, who is proactive, who had probably a stellar naval career ahead of him, to take on what is traditionally a wife’s role for someone of his generation, well, it’s an amazing achievement that he managed to do it so graciously,” said Gristwood.

Eight grandchildren also survive Philip: Peter and Zara Phillips; Prince William and Prince Harry; Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie; and Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. He had 10 great-grandchildren.

A new "DOUBLE MUTANT" variant of the coronavirus has been detected from samples collected in India.

Officials are checking if the variant, where two mutations come together in the same virus, maybe more infectious or less affected by vaccines.

Some 10,787 samples from 18 Indian states also showed up 771 cases of known variants - 736 of the UK, 34 of the South African and one Brazilian.

Scientists in China have found a new virus, which they say is similar to SARS-CoV-2 that causes the COVID-19 disease. According to Express, the new virus that Chinese virologists have discovered has been detected in a bat species and is reportedly about 94 per cent identical to COVID-19. The virus named RpYN06 was discovered by a team of researchers from Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences in Tainan.

Chinese researchers found the new virus after studying 411 bat samples from 23 different species that were collected between 2019 and 2020 in Yunnan province. Scientists discovered four new viruses related to SARS-CoV-2, including the RpYN06 virus. Scientists have said that all four viruses have a similar genome sequence as COVID-19 but likened RpYN06 to be closest to SARS-CoV-2 because of its similar spike protein.

From these data, we obtained 24 full-length coronavirus genomes, including four novel SARS-CoV-2 related and three SARS-CoV related genomes. Of these viruses, RpYN06 exhibited 94.5% sequence identity to SARS-CoV-2 across the whole genome and was the closest relative of SARS-CoV-2 in the ORF1ab, ORF7a, ORF8, N, and ORF10 genes, said the study.

The Emergence of Disease X?

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) had warned about the possibility of another pandemic caused by “Disease X”, where X stands for unexpected. Global experts believe the world could face another pandemic-like situation in the near future caused by an unknown and unexpected disease or disease, which has been dubbed as ‘Disease X’.

READ | Chinese stooge spooked by Quad Summit; 'low-quality strategic construction that serves US'

According to the WHO, Disease X is the possibility of an international epidemic that can spread from a pathogen that still remains novel to humankind, just like the novel coronavirus. The global community is yet to recover from the humanitarian and financial stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and another disease outbreak amid the crisis would mean a catastrophic disaster.

The COVID-19 disease, which is believed to have originated in China before spreading to the rest of the world, is still raging havoc with more than 119 million cases and 2.65 million deaths globally. Governments across the world have deployed vaccination programmes to bring the disease under control. So far, more than 345 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered worldwide, of which 78 million people have been fully vaccinated.

The new variant is spreading more rapidly than the original version,

but it is not believed to be more deadly.

Along with the UK, the same mutation of the Covid-19 virus has also been detected in the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia, the WHO told the BBC.

There is no evidence to suggest the new variant reacts differently to vaccines.

In the UK, large parts of south-east England, including London, are now under a new, stricter level of restrictions in a bid to curb the rapidly spreading virus.

On Sunday, European nations including Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium all announced a halt to flights and travel from the UK. The measures vary and are initially generally short-term.

An EU meeting will be held on Monday morning to discuss a more co-ordinated response.

The Dutch move came after tests carried out on samples taken in the Netherlands earlier this month revealed the same new variant of coronavirus as that reported in the UK.

Pending "greater clarity" on the situation in the UK, the Dutch government said that further "risk of the new virus strain being introduced to the Netherlands should be minimised as much as possible".

The Dutch government also said it would work with other European Union member states in the coming days to "explore the scope for further limiting the risk of the new strain of the virus being brought over from the UK".

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr programme, WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove said that specialists had been "following mutations across the world since the beginning of the pandemic".

What do we know about the new variant?

The WHO said that it was in contact with UK officials over the new variant.

It said the UK was sharing information from ongoing studies into the mutation, and that the WHO would update member states and the public "as we learn more about the characteristics of this virus variant [and] any implications".

Although there is "considerable uncertainty", UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the new variant may be up to 70% more transmissible than the old one.

England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, said the development was "going to make things a lot worse".

He said, however, that there were "really optimistic things if you look, once we get the vaccine out, assuming the vaccine works against this - which at the moment is the working assumption."

Officials say there is no current evidence to suggest the new variant causes a higher mortality rate or that it is affected any differently by vaccines and treatments.

The WHO's senior emergency officer for Europe, Catherine Smallwood, said nine instances of the same variant as seen in the UK had been reported in Denmark, with one case in Australia and one in the Netherlands.

Several other countries had confirmed variants that "carry some of the genetic changes seen in the UK", Dr Smallwood added.

Mutations of the virus are frequently identified, the WHO's Dr Van Kerkhove told the BBC, adding that it was important to understand "what these variants do and how they behave".

Port Pirie smelter

SA city so badly polluted with lead kids can’t go out to play on windy days

A city in Australia is so polluted with toxic lead parents don’t take kids out on windy days and change their clothes once inside – but that’s not enough.

Life with a one-year-old is hectic in any household, but South Australian mum Karen Davis must stay especially vigilant.

She doesn’t take her son, Macen, out on windy days, allow him to go to the beach or play at certain playgrounds, or even remove his shoes in some areas of their hometown, Port Pirie.

The family does not drink tap water or hang their washing to dry outside, and Macen’s clothes are changed as soon as they become dirty – sometimes up to five times daily.

It’s all part of Karen’s constant effort to reduce the level of lead in her son’s blood.

Just kilometres from their home, Port Pirie’s smelter is coating the city in tiny particles of the toxic metal.

It means children can’t do things that would be common anywhere else.

But, despite his mum’s diligent precautions, Macen’s blood lead levels are still too high.

“There’s no way his lead levels should be like this,” Karen, a mother-of-four, told NCA NewsWire.

“The emphasis is not on the children … it’s got to change.”

Port Pirie, 230km north of Adelaide, is home to one of the world’s largest primary lead smelters, which has been in continuous operation since 1889.

The smelter, now operated by metals company Nyrstar, is the backbone of the city’s economy and a major employer for the 15,000 people who live there.

It’s also affected the health of generations, with concerns about contamination dating back to a royal commission into plumbism, the technical term for lead poisoning, held in 1925.

Nearly 100 years later, the problem remains. Port Pirie’s children are still put at risk by the lead they ingest in their homes and communities.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there is no safe level of blood lead concentration, and even readings as low as five micrograms/decilitre (100ml) can be linked to decreased intelligence in children, as well as behavioural difficulties and learning problems.

Leaded petrol was completely phased out in Australia in 2002 due to its effects on human and environmental health.

Nowadays, federal health advice says any blood level above five micrograms/decilitre should be investigated and reduced, particularly if the person is a child or a pregnant woman.

The South Australian government’s own data showed that, in results released last September, lead levels in Port Pirie’s two-year-olds were the highest they’d been since the testing regime began in 2011.

Of the 68 two-year-olds tested, an average lead level of 6.6 micrograms/decilitre was recorded.

In that reporting period, nine of the total 551 children aged four or younger had blood lead levels at or exceeding 20 micrograms/decilitre.

The results have some asking the question: why hasn’t this problem been fixed? And why, despite the efforts of parents, health authorities and smelter operators, are lead levels going up?

Lead is a sensitive issue in Port Pirie, where the livelihoods of many depend on the smelter.

The state government last year imposed a ban on recreational fishing in the local harbour, after testing revealed fish, crabs and mussels were not safe to eat – but some still refuse to acknowledge the problem.

Health officials have been working to lower blood lead levels for more than three decades, with a string of public health programs put in place to help achieve various targets.

Over that time, significant progress has been made – but as lead levels have dropped, so too have the benchmarks considered acceptable.

In 2006, the launch of the “10 by 10” program aimed to reduce the lead levels in 95 per cent of young children to 10 micrograms or lower by the end of 2010.

That target was not reached and the program continued as “10 for Them”, but in 2014 the government and smelter announced a different strategy.

Nyrstar would replace part of its operation with a modern, lower-polluting technology called a top submerged lance furnace.

The government would partly underwrite the deal, which also included a jointly funded 10-year community education program called the Targeted Lead Abatement Program, or TLAP.

That program also undertakes cleaning and greening projects to remove and suppress lead, and supplies breakfasts and healthy snacks to childcare centres and primary schools.

But the redevelopment encountered technical setbacks and, by 2018, the plan was still not complete and Nyrstar was in financial trouble.

That year, emissions were so high that the smelter was forced to shut down for six weeks to ensure it did not breach it's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) licence.

The company was struggling with large debts and a floundering share price when it was eventually taken over by global commodities trader Trafigura in 2019.

In a statement released in December, the EPA said Nyrstar was forecast to narrowly breach its new emissions limit. Picture: NCA NewsWire/David MariuzSource: News Corp Australia

The deal ensured better job security for workers at the smelter, but decades-old environmental issues continued to linger.

When it renewed the company’s licence in July 2020, the EPA included a condition that the smelter reduces its emissions by 20 per cent.

At the end of December, the authority said Nyrstar was forecast to narrowly breach its new limit.

Port Pirie Mayor Leon Stephens acknowledged the breach but said the company had cut a considerable amount from its emissions over a short period of time.

He said there has been an improvement in the operation of the smelter since the 2019 takeover, however, it would take some time for results to be reflected in blood lead test results.

Mr Stephens, who raised his own children in Port Pirie, said the smelter’s current leadership had shown a genuine willingness to work with the community.

He said part of the process going forward would include changes to TLAP, as well as a longer-term strategy beyond the program’s 2024 expiry.

But Mark Taylor, a professor of environmental science and human health at Macquarie University, says the focus on community education does not address the cause of the problem.

“It pushes the onus of responsibility onto mums and dads, and I think that is extremely unfair,” he said.

“It’s not a mum and dad problem. It’s emanating from a polluter, we all know who the polluter is, we all know what the risk is associated with that polluter.

“The reason why there’s lead there … is because of the smelter. Therefore, it’s pretty clear where the responsibility lies.”

Professor Taylor was the lead author on a 2019 study that found emissions “pose a clear risk of harm” to local children, and recommended limits be “significantly” lowered.

Analysing SA Health data, the study also found that Port Pirie residents visited emergency departments for respiratory conditions at more than twice the rate of other South Australians.

Of those presentations, 30 per cent were in children younger than 10 years old.

“Children are our future, and we have a duty to protect our future, we have a duty to protect the children,” Professor Taylor said.

“They’re trading the outcomes of these children’s lives for the profits of a private company.”

A different study, published in 2015, found that 13.5 IQ points were lost when a child’s blood lead level rose from 1 to 10 micrograms per decilitre.

In a statement to NCA NewsWire, a spokesman for the Department for Energy and Mining said Nyrstar’s multi-million dollar investment in its Port Pirie facilities would, over time, enable the company to reduce lead and other emissions substantially to improve environmental and health outcomes for the community.

The spokesman said the state government was working with Nyrstar to develop an improvement plan for smelter emissions and a longer-term focus on daily cleaning of public spaces to reduce community exposure.

“While unforeseen delays in the commissioning of the new plant and recent environmental factors have proved more challenging than expected, regulators remain confident that the major investment in Port Pirie will significantly improve the environment and health of the city,” the statement said.

“The reduction in emissions made possible by the government-supported investment in this regional centre will also allow the Targeted Lead Abatement Program to step up its critical role in addressing legacy lead issues in the community.”

The statement highlighted that the number of caseworkers at the city’s Environmental Health Centre has been doubled in the past three years.

It also said an extensive air monitoring program implemented by Nyrstar would improve day-to-day ability to track further progress in reducing lead exposure.

In a separate statement, a Nyrstar spokesman said the reduction of blood lead levels in children in Port Pirie had always been a “major priority” for the company.

“Nyrstar remains committed to working with a range of government and community stakeholders to improve health outcomes in Port Pirie,” the statement said.

The company said it undertook numerous initiatives in 2020 to improve air quality in the community.

“These included the completion of significant capital works during maintenance stops, upgrading of its air monitoring network, initiating new road and materials handling improvements and purchasing new street sweepers to deliver an improved and expanded site cleaning program,” the spokesman said.

“These programs will continue in 2021, with substantial investments ($25M+) planned to improve plant operations and thereby improve air quality in the community.”

While she was pregnant with Macen, Karen Davis moved to a different part of the city in an effort to reduce her baby’s lead exposure.

But she says it shouldn’t be that way – and she’s calling for radical action.

“I think moving the town is the only solution if they really want to make a difference,” she said.

“There’s no way they’re going to shut it … but I think to move the town, the shopping precinct so that a non-smelter worker won’t have to go into the town.”

Her son’s last blood lead reading was nine micrograms/decilitre – down previously from 10.

“Every time I get a letter letting me know what his lead levels are, straightaway it’s like, ‘You, as a parent, what are you not doing?’” she said.

“It’s really starting to irritate me because they’re not taking responsibility for it.

“We do everything we can.”

Super-infectious mutant COVID-19 variant more likely to infect children

The “mutant” COVID-19 virus now detected in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth are so super infectious that it is also more likely to infect children.

Scientists have warned that the new variant, which is likely to become the dominant virus worldwide within months, is a superspreader compared to the original and is likely to completely reshape the lockdown strategies deployed by governments to control outbreaks.

It’s one reason why Prime Minister Scott Morrison was quick to back the Queensland Premier’s shock decision to announce a three-day lockdown over the weekend after previously raising concerns over such harsh measures.

In the United Kingdom, the mutant virus has also forced the closure of schools, despite hopes to reopen them in January.

While the outbreak is largely contained in Australia, the mutant virus has already been detected among returning travellers in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney.

In Perth, a patient at the centre of multiple PPE protocol breaches in Western Australia tested positive last week.

Three days ago, a family of four in NSW hotel quarantine tested positive to the worrying South African mutation of COVID-19, NSW Health confirmed.

The UK strain is believed to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than earlier versions of the virus.

In Queensland, the trigger for the Brisbane lockdown was a cleaner at a quarantined hotel testing positive on Thursday to the mutant variation.

The worker was in the community for five days and the cleaner’s partner has also tested positive.

Sample tests

on aquatic species taken from waters next to South Australian regional city Port Pirie and its, controversial lead smelter have revealed unacceptable levels of metal contamination particularly lead, in the varied species.

The State Government has announced a recreational fishing ban will stay in place at Port Pirie after impermissible levels of lead were found in several seafood species nearby mussel in the region were found to have 90 times the amount of permissible lead level minister for Primary Industries David Basham said he was unsure whether Port Pirie fishers will ever be able to eat their catch again The State Government announced this week Recreational fishing ban in the waters around Port Pirie

Port Pirie's smelter will exceed its lowered annual lead emissions limit, Nyrstar admits, but the region's mayor says he is comfortable the company is "tracking well" towards achieving the lower figure.
